I bumped into a site that has an IQ test as I searched for possible questions that I could use for my online examination project. I was of course tempted to take the short quiz, human as I am. Though I was a bit busy with my tasks, I decided to give in to my mind’s desire for the moment. Anyway, I don’t think I will be able to focus on my work if I have this overpowering curiosity inside and if I keep hearing the voices saying “give it a try, common, just give it a try” (lol). There were only ten questions though, each of which was tricky, and the good thing was the answers were provided. Knowing that I could somehow “cheat”, I had to fight the urge to peep and have a glimpse of the answer otherwise, I know, I will not be able to enjoy the challenge and I will be a cheater. Well, it was not my first time to take such challenge but I enjoyed it anyway.
So for you, I know you are already curious too (^_^) here’s the test.
A little intelligence test for you – no cheating. Some of these questions are from an MBA entrance test. There are 10 questions. Do not look at the answers found at the end of this document, that would be cheating. Write each of your answers down, it makes a difference. Good Luck!
- Some months have 30 days, some months have 31 days. How many months have 28 days?
- If a doctor gives you 3 pills and tells you to take one pill every half hour, how long would it be before all the pills had been taken?
- I went to bed at eight 8 ‘clock in the evening and wound up my clock and set the alarm to sound at nine 9 ‘clock in the morning. How many hours sleep would I get before being awoken by the alarm?
- Divide 30 by half and add ten. What do you get?
- A farmer had 17 sheep. All but 9 died. How many live sheep were left?
- If you had only one match and entered a COLD and DARK room, where there was an oil heater, an oil lamp and a candle, which would you light first?
- A man builds a house with four sides of rectangular construction, each side having a southern exposure. A big bear comes along. What color is the bear?
- Take 2 apples from 3 apples. What do you have?
- How many animals of each species did Moses take with him in the Ark?
- If you drove a bus with 43 people on board from Chicago and stopped at Pittsburgh to pick up 7 more people and drop off 5 passengers and at Cleveland to drop off 8 passengers and pick up 4 more and eventually arrive at Philadelphia 20 hours later, What’s the name of the driver?
So why don’t you grab your pen and paper and write down your answers. I will be posting the answers on the comment to avoid cheating!
I got 8/10!

1. All of them. Every month has at least 28 days.
2. 1 hour. If you take a pill at 1 o’clock, then another at 1.30 and the last at 2′clock, they will be taken in 1 hour.
3. 1 hour. It is a wind up alarm clock which cannot discriminate between a.m. and p.m.
4. 70. Dividing by half is the same as multiplying by 2.
5. 9 live sheep.
6. The match.
7. White.
8. 2 apples.
9. None. It was Noah, not Moses.
10. You are the driver.
You can check your grading score by counting the number of correct answers out of 10.
Sorry. You fell victim to the rhetorical expression trap. This is why “IQ tests” get such disdain — cultural prejudice affects the answer far too much to be considered a “reliable metric”. Sic semper all of the “soft sciences”.
“Dividing by half” is written in the English language, and must therefore be answered in the same way. And that leads to the question of “which” English: Modern, Elizabethan, Urban, what?
Had the question been expressed in mathematical terms (”30″ / “one-half”) the answer would be different.
In spoken languages (much to the chagrin of simple-minded people) the “rules” are much less formal.
To further obfuscate the issue, I shall take my sheep to a nearby community named “Half”, and do my division in a field adjacent thereto (”BY Half”). How many would I have then?
Answer: I shall have NO sheep, but a truckload of cutlets and briskets, which I will take next-door to the village of “Half” and sell.
If you reflect on this deeply, you too will see how irrelevant “IQ Tests” really are.
ROTFLOL!
The fact that your middleware rendered the end of:
(”30″ / “one-half”)
(which is really a quotation mark followed by a right-parenthesis) as a quotation mark, a space, and a “smiley-face” graphic
serves to illustrate my point better than mere words ever could. Thanks to your blogware programmer for that assistance!
which ones did you get wrong? i got 8/10 too… i got number 7 wrong (i didn’t understand the north pole, polar bear thing at first) and number 9 (i didn’t even think of the difference between noah and moses – i heard ark and just thought 2 animals of each gender…) i’m trisha by the way. hi!!
