English is the official language of the world and learning it is a must in a country who uses it as the second language, like Philippines.  It has been one of the subjects taught from the beginning until the end in the academe – from kinder garden to College that is. Always in the curriculum. English is everywhere.

But having said that, there are still a lot who can’t speak or write proper English – learning the language is never easy. There are a lot of things to remember, a lot of things to consider to perfect the language.  Not all English people can speak or write their language properly. Or should I say, they are also prone to commit mistakes and forget the correct usage of their own dialect/words.

And I for one cannot speak and write correct English all the time. Well, honestly I just learned it because it is necessary and never learned it by heart (hehehe) Thus, having  a good reference is a great help. I searched the web for a good site to refresh my English knowledge and found this one.

I found the site when I was having a hard time deciding what preposition to use. I really don’t know the author but blogged it anyway. I could have bookmarked it but I don’t really look back to my bookmarks so I decided to write a post about it so I won’t forget.

I am finally back to  blog. My last post was about this blog having PR 3 but that was almost a year ago. Yeah, you read it right my last post was dated August 19, 2008. And now, when I finally decided to check this blog again I found out that its PR is down to n/a. So sad but true. I should have updated this blog religiously since then so it’s page rank won’t go down. But I didn’t and there’s no one else to blame (T_T).

But now  I am back to the blogging world again. Let’s see how long it will take me to have this blog ranked higher than n/a. I hope that would be sooner though (cross fingers).

Wow, I couldn’t believe it. My last post was like 3 months ago and that was the last check I made in this blog because I decided to stick with my other blog, for some reasons that I cannot disclose here, and now this blog has PR 3.

Anyway, I am so happy with this blog’s google rank and I will try to have some post here once in a while, that is if I can blog and if my very busy schedule would allow me to write. ^_^

Who wouldn’t know her? The powerful voice! The voice that captured my heart when I first saw Alladin. Well. Lea Salonga is LEA SALONGA. The miss Saigon, the voice behind many animated fairy tales (aw tama bko, heheh), the voice, the voice and the voice!

Brad Cane was so amazing too! Hahhaha, I know it is so obvious I am fascinated with their voices. They can sing really very well.

I bumped into a site that has an IQ test as I searched for possible questions that I could use for my online examination project. I was of course tempted to take the short quiz, human as I am. Though I was a bit busy with my tasks, I decided to give in to my mind’s desire for the moment. Anyway, I don’t think I will be able to focus on my work if I have this overpowering curiosity inside and if I keep hearing the voices saying “give it a try, common, just give it a try” (lol). There were only ten questions though, each of which was tricky, and the good thing was the answers were provided. Knowing that I could somehow “cheat”, I had to fight the urge to peep and have a glimpse of the answer otherwise, I know, I will not be able to enjoy the challenge and I will be a cheater. Well, it was not my first time to take such challenge but I enjoyed it anyway.

So for you, I know you are already curious too (^_^) here’s the test.

A little intelligence test for you – no cheating. Some of these questions are from an MBA entrance test. There are 10 questions. Do not look at the answers found at the end of this document, that would be cheating. Write each of your answers down, it makes a difference. Good Luck!

Did you see this? Were you attentively viewing this pageant? I didn’t mean anything bad in posting this video and I didn’t mean to criticize Janina San Miguel here with her answer. I find her strikingly pretty and smart-looking (when she is not talking) LOL. I guess she was just so nervous and tense during the contest.

I have been reading all my life. I know you are too, it is part of learning. Part of our everyday lives as an educated being. And I am really amazed with people who can sharply remember the details of the book they have read months and even years ago because admittedly I am not so good in remembering exact details about things. Well, I can remember the details of some books that I read years ago (Harry Potter! by J.K. Rowling). Books that made me forget all of my assignments, projects, quizzes and everything because I was so soaked up reading, books which had me scolded by my mom because I couldn’t get my butt out of my room to clean and wash the stocked dishes for a day. But I think I remember it well because I am so hooked up with the book, not to mention the Harry Potter movies that I never missed to watch. But what about the other interesting books that I have read over the years? What about some of the informative books that I have read because I had to, books like Noli Me Tangere and El Felibusterismo, those are lovely books but I can’t seem to remember much about their contents.

As I have browsed the Internet today I found this blog written by Cameron Schaefer in his post entitled 7 Ways to Remember What You have Read and found it really helpful. It was stated in the post that reading is one of the best ways to learn, develop and change and the immense benefits of reading are only as great as one’s ability to remember and process the information. Nothing is more frustrating than reading a great book and not being able to recall any of the major points a year or even a month later. It makes the whole process seem like a huge waste.

Here’s a piece from the article:

1) Read With the Goal of Teaching Someone Else – My friend Glenn has one of the most brilliant minds I know. He can read a book and process the information, quickly adapting new ideas into his life and teaching others along the way. The secret to Glenn’s ability started during his childhood. Every weekend his family would go to the local library to read. During dinner they would teach the other members of the family what they learned that day. This ritual formed a wonderful habit in Glenn of reading comprehensively in order to teach someone else. He had to constantly think, “How will I be able to explain the main ideas of this book to others.” In doing so he delved deep into the book and the information stuck with him.

2) Read the Last Chapter First – This one is more geared towards non-fiction as I can already hear people screaming, “But it’ll ruin the ending!” At the end of most books is a summary chapter that gives the main ideas and how they all tie together. By reading this first you are then able to catch these ideas and themes more easily as you go through the book. It also allows you to read like the author would read his own book, with a full understanding of where everything is going.

3) Take Notes – Lots of people utilize this technique in school, but let it go when they toss their caps at graduation. Taking notes allows a reader to right down key points, themes and memorable quotes. In doing so the information is then processed twice, once when read and once when written. This gives the reader a much greater chance of remembering. My friend Beau uses a pencil to mark and highlight in the book as he reads and then transfers this information into Google Docs. He has a great summary of his method here.

4) Read When You’re Awake – Most people read right before they go to bed. After a long day, they’re usually tired and hardly in the best state to process and retain information. By reading at other times throughout the day chances are their minds would work much better. If you are a night person maybe it is the best time for you to read. The important thing is to know your body and know what times of day are best for thinking and concentrating. Try to schedule your reading during these times and you will give yourself a much better chance of remembering what you read.

5) Discuss What You’re Reading – Some of the books we remember most vividly are those that we read in our high school English class. Why? It is the practice of nearly every teacher to have lively class discussions and debates over each section of a book. In discussing the book we were able to process the information as a group, bouncing ideas off each other and hearing different perspectives. All of these made us use the information in various ways cementing it in our minds and helping us remember. Most of us are no longer in high school, but the options are endless. Join a book club, or if you have a good group of friends, start one. Discuss the book online in book forums or in a social networking group like Facebook. The important thing is to talk about what you’re reading.

6) Read the Cliff Notes First – We’re not in high school anymore, so it’s not cheating. Especially for some of the classics, reading the cliff notes before starting the book can provide all kids of insight into characters, themes, symbolism and author background. By reading these things beforehand you are helping ensure that you won’t miss them as you read the book. Another benefit of reading summaries is the mental debate you will have each time you reach a controversial section as you ask yourself whether you agree with the conventional interpretations.

7) Find Your Reading Environment – Sometimes more important than how you are reading is where you are reading. Is the television on? Are the kids crawling all over you? Do you do your best reading on the airplane? Some things can’t be helped, but finding a good reading environment goes a long way. I had never thought much about where I read until reading a great post Ben Casnocha wrote on optimizing activity for location a couple months ago. He explained, “…when thinking about what you’re going to do, think about where you’re going to be, and how that place will affect your productivity at completing the activity.” Find your reading environment and enjoy remembering what you read.

I am always wondering why people around me seem to be so engrossed with writing their blogs almost everyday.
